... If Microsoft is smart about exploiting its advantages, who's to say no?

True enough, yet Gates' restless ambition inspires real dread among the trust-busters. With Microsoft standing astride the interstices of electronic commerce like a colossus, the company is in position to dominate the 21st century in a way the early 20th century 'malefactors of great wealth' never could. When one company holds all the marbles, say sayonara to balance of power, level playing field and all the other niceties of capitalist theory.

Or, as the local commie said long ago, how is competiton supposed to work if nobody can compete? It all sounds sort of feudal in the end. But rest assured, Microsoft will give the customers what they want, like the obsolete retail Win95 that's still flying off the shelves.

Cheers, Dan.
