Providing a modest amount of aid to Iraq to prevent an Iranian victory is far from making Saddam a US puppet. An Iranian victory was a possibility and would have been bad for the US and the world.

We provided truly massive aid to Stalin during the war against Nazi Germany. I think we can be assured Stalin was just as evil a ruler during that time as he was before and after. No one argues that the wartime aid to the USSR made Stalin a US puppet or that the US is responsible for the USSR's evil policies.

The same standard should apply to the US and Iraq.
