No you sure don't. It's a shame parents have gotten away from teaching their kids to respect others.

All of my kids say yes/no ma'am, yes/no sir. If called, they don't respond "yeah" or "what", they say either "sir" or "ma'am". I extend that courtesy to them as well. When they have friends over, they aren't expected to change their habits totally but they do follow my kids leads when they are speaking to an adult.

Many times over the years I've had parents call me and ask what I threatened their kids with to get them to speak to them with respect. I say, my kids do it, they follow their example and when they are calling to me, I respond to them as if they were my own kids.

A little respect, coupled with a warm smile, goes a lot farther then many people think. <g>
