New Delhi, Feb 13
Mirroring the declining trend in the prices of food articles, the inflation rate receded below the three per cent mark for the fourth time during this fiscal to touch 2.88 per cent on January 29, after remaining static at a 32-week high of 3.31 percent the week before.
However, it was near the five per cent mark at 4.82 per cent during the corresponding week last year (January 30, 1999).
The recent 0.43 per cent drop in the inflation rate was on account of substantial decline in prices of vegetables, gram, poultry chicken and copra. But the prices of pork, fish, jowar, barley, fodder, raw jute, acrylic fibre, sanitaryware and PVC insulated cables took an upward curve during the week under review.
Two weeks ago, the inflation rate had touched the 32-week high of 3.31 per cent which was the highest since June 12 1999, when it stood at 3.38 per cent. On January 22, the inflation rate was static at 3.31 per cent for the second time in this current fiscal, the other occasion was on September 18 when it remained unchanged at 2.02 per cent. UNI |
