The statement about reflective coatings not stopping the beam really make me wonder. Some of these coatings are extremely thin films of gold or silver. Their near IR reflectance are over 80%. It seems that that would at a minimum affect the max range if not remove a large portion of the available bandwidth even well within the max range.
