Elmer, it's not that simple. AMD getting the design win would have given them a lot of credibility. If X-Box becomes a success, guess who gets credit for supplying the brains of this highly popular set-top box (and I'm not talking about mind-share to the end-user - they don't care about the CPU in their console system; I am talking about among the industry)?

Fine, let them get credibility. Let them fill up a fab making low priced processors. You don't think MSFT was going to pay AMD much for Xbox do you? Remember, they must commit to the potential demand. Let them commit a fab to sell at cost. It took them 3.5 years to build their last fab and according to them, a couple of years later they still aren't up to full capacity.

AMD could easily set aside fab space to manufacture .18u 5 years in the future. At the cost they sell some of their CPUs, I'm sure that a million or so X-Box processors per quarter would do them good.

Like I said, they must commit to potential demand. MSFT had to make allowances for what happens if Xbox is a big hit. Who would design a product around limited supply? Intel would have loved to see AMD's fabs tied up with low margin old technology.
