Great article suma. And remember, it was the south's reaction to the 1964 civil rights act that started the south down their masochistic road of voting for Republicans, that then, turned around and destroyed their unions and supressed the minium wage and destroyed their social programs.
Then in 1980, lee Atwater saw how the neo cons could exploit this masochistic tendency of the south to the max and his "southern strategy' was born.
And as the neo cons exploitd the south, they also laughed them for falling for their manipulation.
All Lee Atwater needed to do was hold a mirror up to the south and say: "see we are like you" read soft on integration and we hate the book reading liberals as much as you do.
The Republicans strategy was further enhanced in 1980 by Lee Atwater, Grover Norquist Ralph Reed and Karl Rove to the point where it was down right ugly, cynical and Orwellian to the MAX.
And especially anti intellectual.
