Dems will be the first to bitch when the price of oil/fuel climbs higher. Dems are keeping us dependent on foreign oil and should be ashamed.

Drilling in ANWR wont have much impact on world wide prices. If there was a 10 billion barrel find in Russia tomorrow, nobody would be talking about it substantially dropping the worldwide price of oil.

As for dependence on foreign oil, ANWR would provide a small help....but that really only is going to matter in times of national emergency. The other 99.9% of the time it really doesnt matter who is providing us with the oil. We spend the same amount of money (and the ME earns the same amount) regardless if Alaska, Norway, or Iran is supplying the oil. Simply fact of economics. Actually, a better way to prepare for a time of national emergency might be to dramatically increase the strategic petroleum reserve.

The way I see it, there is $550 billion dollars just sitting in the ground just waiting to be picked up. It doesnt make much sense to let the caribbous stop us, particularly when Prudhoe Bay doesnt seem to have impacted there numbers. Personally, I would like to reduce our dependence on oil in general (foreign or domestic). An increase in the price of oil has been a substantial contributor to a number of our previous recessions. Any insulation from those price shocks would help shift the balance of power towards the US when dealing with the ME.

Raising CAFE standards or introducing a subsidy for hybrids (versus the idiotic TV subsidy) COMBINED with ANWR drilling would be a good way to go. Actually, using the revenue from ANWR to subsidize hybrids might actually be a great way to get a couple of more votes. The overall impact on the environment would be positive. Unfortunately, both Republicans and Democrats are stuck in their idealogical straight jackets....so I'm not holding my breath.
