Minister Eitam: Battles Were Filmed
Minister Effie Eitam (NRP) said that there is no reason to have the UN fact-finders meet with the IDF soldiers who fought in Jenin and take testimony from them. He said that all the battles were photographed from the air, and the films show the soldiers calling on the inhabitants to leave their homes in order not to be harmed. "The films prove that there was no massacre," Eitam said.

The UN group currently includes the former president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Cornelio Somaruga; former UN high commissioner for refugees Sadako Ogata; and ex-Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari. A late add-on to the staff is US Army General William Nash. Israel was pleased by the addition of Nash, as Israel believes that he will recognize that Jenin was a battle between IDF troops and Arab gunmen, and not an Israel “massacre” as the PLO propaganda machine suggests.

In other UN related news, the UN Security Council yesterday announced that it is very concerned for Yasser Arafat’s well-being as a result of the ongoing IDF presence around his Mukata headquarters in Ramallah and Israel’s imposed isolation on the PLO leader. The UN expressed no concern over the discovery of over a dozen hand grenades in Arafat’s compound. IDF soldiers confiscated the grenades and safely dismantled them.
