Patrick,
1) I've never lost my connection, not at home or at my office on the 13th floor of a building in the financial district of San Francisco.
2) Besides being much thinner than the other modems, according to customer service the SX modem will operate at about 56Kbps when the R2 128Kbps system rolls out. The old modem will operate at about 38Kbps on the new system.
3) My SX battery lasts about 6 hours, my laptop always runs out of power first, so I charge both up when the laptop runs out.
4) I've never had any problems with interference or coverage. In fact, the other day I was surfing the web in a Thai restaurant on Sacramento St. in an old brick building. I pulled out my cell phone to make a call and couldn't get a signal, so I had to go outside to make the call. I don't know if the Richochet antenna is much more omnidirectional than a cell phone, or if the coverage is that much better.
5) Customer service told me that there would be a credit to buyers of the old modems who want to switch to the 128K modems, but didn't know how much. The new service will cost around $60 to $80 per month, and I haven't decided whether to switch, or keep my old service for $30/month and run at 56K.
6) According to the MCOM website, 128K beta test is getting spectacular results with throughput of up to 195Kbps.
7) I don't know of any negatives, but maybe others might have a different experience.
I was going to wait for 128K to roll out before I bought a Richochet, but I'm glad I didn't. Being untied from my desktop is fantastic.
