Natural Selection is such an easy concept, but produces such complex results. That's actually true of all the great understandings of how our universe works.

On this planet there are plenty of species who don't have the ability to remember or associate enough to have ideas. They survive none the less because they wind up not competing directly in the arena where ideas are a selection criteria. Just the same, there are species that don't need bones, or some other concept that has proved successful for some different species.

It is not I who want to rank the species by a single characteristic.
