Allen, isn't this really the fourth paradigm by including mini-computers. I remember when Digital, Data General, NCR, Quantel, Contel/CADO, Point-4, Burroughs, Basic Four and others I have forgotten, all ruled with their proliferation of midisize multi-tasking computers. This period would have been approximately mid seventies to mid eighties.

These computers began the automation of small business and I think it would be a huge oversight to exclude this important occurence. They also began the decentralization of computer programming. Two very very important events. A third event that is also important during this era was the creation of horizontal accounting software for small to midsize business from companies such as Open Systems, PeachTree, Basic Four and others.

The paradigm can be shown by looking at the career of many programmers. Initially doing your programming by punching cards to the mainframe or using a dumb terminal then by signing up for one of the mini-computer stations and now by having your own pc (will we continue to have a pc to program in the fourth paradigm?).

PC's of course put these proprietary O/S minicomputer companies out of business or in a very vicarious position.
