The internet box is not going to replace anything!
As you have mentioned, these boxes do not have the
computing power of typical computers. But, they are
not aiming these products for anyone that is currently
on the Web. The idea behind these limited machines is
to convince consumers that are not using computers that
the Web is affordable and worthy of a modest expenditure.
To say that these machines will use obsolete micro-
processors is definitely false. Companies such as Sun,
DEC, Patriot Scientific and quite possibly MIPS are
designing and/or producing processors designed
specifically for being used in devices such as the
internet box. These processors execute JAVA code
much faster than a Pentium. And contrary to what
Intel would have you believe, an efficient micro-
processor doesn't have to be all that expensive. I
am not one who is going crazy over these new boxes,
but then again they are not marketing these machines
for people like me. We'll have to wait and see how
successful they are at selling these machines, but
if you look at the number of homes in the U.S. that
are not equipped with a PC you can see why so many
companies are planning these machines.

In short you can't compare these machines to PCs
because they are not intended to compete with them.
These companies want to make sure that those who
are waiting to buy a low priced PC someday to get on
the internet, choose to buy a low priced, non-Intel
machine today. It is no surprise that Intel is not
endorsing these machines.

Just another opinion,
JJB
