I hope we will continue to establish a convivial thread culture during our next few weeks. So far I think we are successfully building a place to engage in, as the thread header states, "polite, honest discussion of our plans, successes, and failures [to] sharpen our investing skills and teach us how to harness the volatility in our portfolios."
I agree completely FaultLine. I think you’ve done a commendable job creating a safe, friendly spot for questions and discussion. It’s not easy to “bare all” in this type of forum. I’m impressed by the candor exhibited by the contributors to the thread. Real life examples provide an invaluable learning experience for all of us, and it takes a lot of guts to share one’s questions, doubts, confusion, etc. in so public a way.
I’m still awaiting my copy of McMillan’s book from Amazon, but even without the help of the text, the posts (particularly individual examples and subsequent discussion) have been eye-opening. Actually, not having the text has made the past few days a unique learning opportunity. I’d equate it to solving a jigsaw puzzle. Each post provides a new piece to the puzzle, although not necessarily an adjacent piece. The challenge for me has been fitting these various tidbits of information together in a way that makes sense and gives me a clear “picture” so to speak.
Again, my thanks to you for taking the initiative to start this thread. You’re doing an admirable job, and your efforts are much appreciated.
