Francis Crick knew this. That's why he hypothesized the directed panspermia idea

You write that only because you are not familiar with his actual arguments. He argued that the theories of the time did not differentiate between an indigenous origin for life and a transplanted one in their conclusions or tests. He was correct, but that doesn't mean he was really suggesting that life arrived on comets. He was pointing to the areas in which information and research was lacking. In response there have been many new research projects with special emphasis on the origins of DNA.

Fred Hoyle was a good writer of science fiction.
He was prone to a common mistake. The present has gone through a very precise and statistically unlikely path from the past. That is self evident because here we are. The mistake is to assume that the chaos works backwards too, and therefore the past was very precisely set to achieve the present. The truth is that the present might have been different, it just happened to be what it is. It had to be something.
