Meet The Press

I have been watching Meet the Press for 35 minutes now. During the entire show, while discussing the Libby indictment, Tim Russert and his guests gave the impression that what the Libby indictment was about the decision to go to war in Iraq and the outing of a covert CIA agent.

When the segment with Bill Safire came up, 35 minutes into the show, he pointed out the obvious, that after two years of investigation, the prosecutor found no evidence of what was alleged to be the original crime. Tim Russert then declared that to be an important point. After spending the entire show giving the viewer the opposite impression, he conceded that Safire’s point that the indictment was about Libby lying and not evidence of some conspiracy to out a CIA agent was an important point.

The best line from the show came from David Brooks in response to Tim Russert’s question about whether the Democrats will join in and help George Bush in his second term. (I am paraphrasing, but it has to be one of the dumbest questions I can imagine being asked by a person who has watched politics for the past five years.) Brooks answered quite honestly and accurately, “He’s bloody, they want to kill him.”

My throat is raw and I can’t stop coughing, so this will probably be all from me today.
