The Millitary issue is what brought Spain down, after the defeat of the Great Armada in 1688(think?)the spanish were unable to defend shiping routes and colonize 3rd world. Herin England took over the baton. Unless a nuke destroyed NYC or we were millitarily defeated by someone USA Hegemony is not going anywhere, and we can run deficits because we have Big Boats and lots of planes and can tell anyone GFY.
