That link emphasized the use of smart cards for both PC access and building access, and I can tell you that if you are in a federal building you are probably walking through guards. In other, private buildings in which the government leases space, you generally need a mag stripe card and an access code to enter.

There are obvious security and cost savings to the government in using biometrics and smart cards for both PC use and building access. I don't think a non-biometric solution will solve both problems in one solution. So it seems that we will be seeing biometrics as a basic element, and not just a potential luxury option.

It also helps explain why IDX is pushing building access products at the moment.
