Geffen Slams Hillary
LIBERTAS

After reentering presidential fund-raising circles on Tuesday night, it didn't take long for David Geffen to jump into the political fray.

Hillary Clinton's campaign is calling for Barack Obama to remove Geffen from his campaign, return the money he raised and to denounce remarks he made to the New York Times' columnist Maureen Dowd.

Long simmering resentments against the Clinton boiled over in an interview with Dowd, published in her colmn on Wednesday. Among other things, he said of the Clintons, "Everybody in politics lies, but [the Clintons] do it with such ease, it's troubling."

Geffen's politics may be all wrong but that the Clinton's are exceptionally talented liars is dead on. The real story here is Hillary's overreaction. It shows a surprising amount of fear of Obama. Just because one of Obama's supporters criticized her she expects that supporter to be denounced and removed? That's absurd. It also calls more attention to Obama and treats him more seriously than a front-runner should. Hillary should be playing above-it-all now; waiting to respond only when asked about such things; not playing defense.

My heart goes out to Obama. He's up against the Clinton machine and they are merciless when threatened. Something few remember or talk about was the full-fronted assault on Monica Lewinsky when Clinton was still denying anything had happened between them. Remember the cruel stories and rumors about her sanity and stalking — the old boyfriends who gave interviews about her obsessions and mental problems? Remember how all that went away when the stained dress showed up? We all possess the power to destroy another human being. What separates us is our willingness to use it.
