That is true. Most people will never contemplate it from that angle. Frankly, your post made me stop and think. (You do that often.) The culture of Europe at the time was to expand and control; it is colonialism. It is natural given the culture that someone would colonize the Americas.

If the current natives had a more technically advanced culture they might have been able to assimilate the technology and repel the invading colonists. Sociologically, it was unlikely because they never developed a culture of population growth creating pressure to expand territory and extract resource efficiencies. Given enough time it would have happened, but time collapsed when European settlers decided the land was effectively uninhabited when it was only underutilized by their own standards and not those of the then current inhabitants.
