I think that many of the people who write for the trade press are missing the point you make. Yes, it's true that x2 (or any other 56K technology) probably won't work at full capacity for most of those who will use it. But about 99% of these users really won't care, as long as it delivers speeds significantly higher than what they've been accustomed to.
