Mentioning Greek philosophers, the contrasting ideas of the universe as being either designed by an intelligent being or a result of a random interaction of atoms moving in space goes back to them.

Epicurus was a proponent of the latter. Plato and Aristotle the former.

Of course, they all thought the universe was eternal and infinite. which it isn't.
