I think that many of the people who write for the trade press are
missing the point you make. Yes, it's true that x2 (or any other 56K
technology) probably won't work at full capacity for most of those who
will use it. But about 99% of these users really won't care, as long as
it delivers speeds significantly higher than what they've been
accustomed to.

I totally agree. Last night I was listening to the Penguins hockey game using Real Audio and also posting on SI without sound interruption. I could not do that with my 28.8 modem. The speed increase is technically 80% from what I was getting in the past. That 80% less time watching a screen draw on a large graphics page feels like it gives one all the more time in the world. The x2 modem was one of the best "investments" I have made. Fortunately, my ISP supports it too. One last comment. I have other computers with only 28.8 modems and if I use them on the net, it now seems like forever to draw a high graphics page.
