We've been asking that forever. He was a local hero here playing highschool baseball. As well, he played in a league comprising the best players in the province of Ontario. He could flat out hit the ball.
Unfortunately, his progression occurred at the same time that the Jays, in their wisdom at the time, decided to cut back on scouting, The Jays, under AA their new GM, have beefed up their scouting ranks and minor league system which will, hopefully, avoid any future embarrassing local misses.
You probably noticed the backflips by this new management in obtaining Laurie, another Canadian, albeit west coast boy. Can't chance missing another Canadian player with huge upside. It's just good marketing for the Jays if they can seed the team with one or two exciting Canadian boys. And yes, Jays missed a huge marketing opportunity by not signing Votto.
Oh well, if he had to go to someone else, I'm not unhappy with Cinci, my favourite team while growing up in the 60's and 70's, before Toronto got their baseball franchise. |
