"But most religious people seem to want a God who is involved on a day to day basis, someone who can and will interfere on our behaves, someone who will listen to our pleas and alter the course of events accordingly."

There are all kinds of people claiming to be or to endorse deeply religious attitudes, including people like, Aristotle, Einstein, Mother Teresa, Abraham Lincoln, Ghandi, Joe down the street, Thomas Jefferson, Wilbur the Janitor, Barack Obama, and Socrates.

There are insincere people who claim to believe in only those things which can be scientifically proven, and who will fight to the death standing on this position while never giving a moments thought to what qualifies as scientific evidence; just as there are people who have fought to the death for their church community without ever having considered the essential teachings of their own religion which might have forbade that particular church directive.

Most people want a Genie (magical fixes) to come from the Lamp (a tool technical or scriptural). There are people who may think prayer is like rubbing a genie's lamp just like there are people who think the process of scientific observation or instruments of science can mechanistically answer every question and resolve every personal problem.

There is great risk taken by labeling people as simply one or the other via a cultural label.
