Gregory,

Having worked with FTP programs on both WinTel and Unix platforms, I am not aware of any way to do this directly with the basic FTP program.

There secondary programs which allow one to direct command sequences to a second ( FTP )process, as well as receive replies, and usually involve some sort of scripting language. I have found these to be somewhat cumbersome to code and maintain, especially when it comes to dealing with error situations.
