People take advantage of 'perfect day' to protest in Toronto

TORONTO (CP) - Demonstrators took advantage of a glorious sunny day on Saturday to protest the looming war in Iraq.
Early estimates by police suggested 4,000 to 5,000 marched in downtown Toronto from the U.S. Consulate to the Moss Park Armoury, a facility homeless activists would like to see become a shelter. With a high of 10 C forecasted, families turned out pushing strollers, dogs were taken for walks along the protest route and light jackets replaced the parkas and tuques that were mandatory during the colder protests of the last few weeks.
Toronto's protest was one of many scheduled for Saturday across the country and the world.
In Montreal, early reports suggested tens of thousands had filled the streets.
On Friday afternoon, demonstrators in Vancouver began a 24-hour vigil at the city's U.S. consul.
In chilly Washington, volunteers unfurled banners and stacked red buckets to collect donations in preparation for Saturday's march around the White House.
The route of the march was taking demonstrators to the Washington Monument during the afternoon and then to the White House before circling back. |
