Certainly according to G-d's Law he was not justified. By the morality we all (or most) see he was wrong. I wonder where this morality comes from if not from G-d. The reason he was not stopped is because although we see this moral law we are unwilling to obey it ourselves. This to me is the problem with people making up morality, or agreeing by consensus. If evil is only what we know to be wrong inside, then what is to stop us from changing our mind. The people of Germany may have looked the other way out of fear. Others may do so because of greed or insanity. I can only know sin because of the Law of G-d, which he placed inside his creation. If we choose not to believe in him, and depend upon the understanding of men, we open up a large can of worms.
