Willcousa, Re: "Also on the topic of holding back faster processors we have the droids telling us from time to time that AMD has been doing so."

I remember the AMDroids saying that last year when Jerry "where's mine" Sanders made the bold claim that AMD could increase the frequency of the Athlon by 100MHz every six weeks. AMD did, in fact, ship a 1.1GHz and 1.2GHz Athlon in that fashion, but for a while after that, nothing seemed to happen. It was then that the AMDroids said that AMD had Athlons capable of running at up to 1.5GHz, but they were simply "holding back" due to marketing reasons. Of course, we know that AMD never saw a 1.5GHz processor until the desktop Palomino launched this past October - almost one year later. I'm real sure that AMD was just "holding back" to squeeze the last bit of profit they could out of their 1.4GHz Thunderbird processors that they were giving away at firesale prices.
