They are entertaining, though. Urban myths are often good ways to gauge the fears of the time. Because of the Internet, they can be a lot more uniform than in the past, but those sort of things are probably baked into the genome. Part of the urge to spread gossip, it is all part of building communities.

The Internet allows for epistemic closure, though. You can now have your information ecosystem tailored to whatever you desire. And out of the billions on the planet who can access the Internet, you can find a significant community devoted to anything.
