Starting With Bad Facts

-- Lorie Byrd

Mickey Kaus has a stronger constitution than I do. He has taken a look at Tim Russert and other NBC reporters covering the Russert role in the Plame investigation and has some interesting findings.

I watched a bit of Chris Matthews’ Sunday show this weekend, but didn’t make it through the entire show. I find it hard to justify wasting 30 minutes of my time watching a “balanced” panel of five liberals sitting around discussing each topic by starting with a completely false premise. This is especially true for the topics of Iraq and Plame. With Iraq, the premise is that everything we have done there has been an utter and complete failure. When it comes to Plame it is just accepted as fact by those on the Matthews’ panel each week that Valerie Plame was a covert agent intentionally outed in retribution for Joe Wilson proving that Saddam didn’t seek uranium from Africa. Can you count how many problems there are with that set of “facts"? I count at least five.

Of course, this distortion of facts is not confined to the Matthews Sunday show. At least he is consistent. Last week on Hardball I changed the channel after David Shuster’s line in his Plame set-up piece “then, the administration came after his wife.” If that is where the “reporter” starts, then what truth can be expected to be found in the report?
