Mr Heddaya makes some interesting points. But... typical of the "tech and design" journalism business he seems to lack training or self education on the subject about which he writes.

Skeuomorphism might make sense on a website or app, for artistic or emotional effect but it makes much less sense in an OS or OS/Native related apps. One should know immediately if one is in the OS or a native app or a third party app.

Think of it this way, our streets and plumbing systems are uniform for a reason. That doesn't mean homes or bathrooms have to be standardized. It would make less than no sense for a stop sign to mimic the foliage around it, so as not to ruin the "look" of a neighborhood. Cobble stones might be OK for a small residential street but they would not be good for a freeway or most streets.

Brushed chrome or aluminum is not so bad as it appears virtually flat grey which is a good color for an OS, felt or wood are not for this simple reason illustrated by what Joseph Albers knew and illustrated:

Both of the yellow squares in the above images are identical in color and size. One of the first things they teach you in graphic design is the background around your work should be neutral grey.
