Wilson Bashed President? So What

My favorite part of Wilson's epoch-commencing recollection, titled "What I didn't find in Africa," was the color stuff.

He wrote that the seasonal winds "had clogged the air with dust and sand." Through the dusty haze, he "could see camel caravans crossing the Niger River (over the John F. Kennedy bridge), the setting sun behind them."

After his brief Hemingway turn amid the camels and dust, however, Wilson quickly reverted to ambassador-speak: From what he actually sees to things he implies knowing. From things that are demonstrably, obviously true - like camels - to that which he wishes people to believe is true. Just like Prince Bandar getting tough with the terrorists.

And just like his reference in his op-ed to forged documents detailing "yellowcake" uranium sales by Niger to Saddam Hussein's Iraq, phony documents no one in the United States saw until eight months after the ambassador returned from his Niger tea parties.

I long have marveled at Wilson's ambassadorial dexterity in that piece. He wrote of the assurances all those Nigerian officials gave him that it would be lunacy - lunacy! - to believe a deal with the Iraqis for uranium was possible.

Then, out of nowhere, writing about phony documents that he admits never seeing.

And from this people conclude, Bush lied
