solid state electronics, and they have probably gotten cheap enough
to displace tubes by now, but I'm not sure this was the case 10-20
years back; that may have been one reason for the military, especially
in countries with less overkill in their military budgets,
keeping some tube
equipment around after it was obsolete for other purposes.
