Raytheon expects orders for Tomahawk From today's Globe page E07, Business / Region Briefs: Raytheon Co. could see an acceleration of orders for its Tomahawk cruise missile as a result of recent military actions. The US Navy, the prime user of the missile, said it has requested authorization to accelerate plans to buy upgraded copies of the missile, which the Lexington-based defense contractor builds mainly in Tucson. Under a request pending with Secretary of Defense William Cohen, the Navy seeks $113 million to pay for the retrofitting of 324 missiles with the latest technologies. The money had been allocated for work in 2000 and 2001, but the Navy says it needs the missiles sooner as replacements, after firing more than 300 of them against targets in Iraq in December. Tomahawks also have been fired during the current round of air strikes against Yugoslavia, further depleting the Navy's supply. The Navy has ''over 2,000 Tomahawks'' on hand, said Lieutenant Meghan Mariman, most of which use satellite-based navigation devices. However, the Navy is slowly upgrading Tomahawks that are not equipped with the latest technology. In addition to the new navigation systems, upgrades would include new titanium warhead casings and newer engines. Raytheon Class A shares rose 1 to 59; Class B rose 1 1/16 to 59 11/16.
