Well, if you can limit the rating to one per user, per post, that would solve the issue. You could even let the user change their rating, if they change their mind.

Further you could tabulate top-notch users, in addition to messages, under "Hot Lists".

You can see where i am going with this. Fool follows a similar philosophy. But when they switched to a subscription model, they lost the majority of their insightful users & messages.

SI however, has not fallen into that trap. The quality here is top-notch. Arguably the best discussion board out there.
