AOL to Unveil New Features

The expansion of services will include the launch of AOL-by-phone, enabling members to hear e-mail and news.

America Online (AOL) will unveil a new version of its client software and a host of new services aimed at extending the online service's reach beyond PCs, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

A continuation of the company's AOL Anywhere strategy, the expansion will see the launch a new AOL-by-Phone service, which enables customers to call a toll-free number and, using voice commands, check e-mail and information such as stock quotes, news and weather, the Journal report said. AOL by Phone will be launched at the end of January and will reportedly cost $4.95 per month.

For PC users, meanwhile, AOL will release version 6.0 of its client software. The upgrade will include support for a soon-to-be-launched music-distribution system that includes a copy protection system and is designed to enable commercial music distribution without fear of mass piracy.
