Pete, I looked at Xeon DP 2MB L2 at 3.6GHz and it loses to a Opteron 252. It would still lose, if it had increased clock to 3.8GHz. It still loses, if it also got double the L2. It still loses, if it had a 1066MHz FSB.

That is not the case. The two are fairly close, while Xeon has the lead in most of the high-profile standard server benchmarks. I´m thinking TPC-C, SAP SD 2-tier, SPECjbb2000, Microsoft MMB3 and so on - Anand´s database test was also revealing.

Opteron 280 will be out by Q4, possibly even Q3 of this year.

This would be nice if true, but I´m comparing current roadmaps from both manufacturers without taking wishful thinking into account.

It is true that INTEL´s roadmap could slip, we´ve seen how that
happened to AMD´s 252 as well, but that is not something I can project.
