Recommended reading. . . , Gretchen Morgenson in the Sunday New York Times had a very concise and insightful description of the kinds of problems that paying people in options can lead to. While the stock price of Microsoft was going up, paying people in options and buying some of them back was a virtuous cycle, but on the way down it can become vicious circle. I recommend that everyone get a copy of that article and read it.

This is not to pick on Microsoft. That same analogy can be used for practically every tech stock in America, and most certainly for the behemoths like Intel, Oracle, Cisco, Dell, etc. So folks should try to understand how this daisy chain was put together, so that they can understand what it's likely to be like when they unwind.
