Methane is a potent greenhouse gas. The good news it that it oxidizes to CO2 over time.

Cows aren't the only source, though. As permafrost thaws, it releases methane. When very cold water warms, the clathrates which sequesters methane produced by bacteria, releases methane. That is why lakes in the Arctic and the Arctic Ocean itself is bubbling.

Ruminants, at least the huge number of cattle we raise, is something we have control over.
