Not even close to being true. Now granted, they have made it worse, but humans have been modifying the climate and environment long before the agricorps. A lot of the Great Plains was deforested by the Native Americans due to using fire to hunt and in warfare. Gilgamesh, Hewer of Wood and Builder of Cities ran into problems with deforestation way back when, at least according to his Epic. Now the ME was in the long, downhill slide after the change in weather patterns created the Sahara, which was verdant, at the end of the Ice Age, but things got marketed worse as we chopped down the trees. Just read the Bible.

Back when we wandered the continents as hunter-gatherers, our impact was minimal. Because our numbers were tiny. But with the introduction of agriculture when the climate started to stabilize after the last Ice Age, our impact has been measurable. The rise of the cultivation of rice can be traced in ice cores due to increases in methane, for example. So for the past 14 thousand years or so.
