David Gergen is a shrewd man......"Exit polls from national elections are revealing. For the past quarter century, self-identified liberals have been the smallest share of the electorate, representing roughly 20 percent or less of voters. But conservatives have not grown to the power they hoped: They reached a peak of 36 percent in 1984 and again in 1994; in November, their share of the electorate fell to 29 percent–smaller than the base that elected Reagan. It is the self-identified moderates who have always held the key: They represented 50 percent of voters in the elections of both 1998 and 2000. Moderates, in other words, are America's swing voters, and as they have shown time and again, they will punish a party that goes too far to the left or right."
