It seems to me that a reading of the Constitution, Article I. Section 8. could dispose of a large number of the objections to "taxes", unfair, unjust or whatever one's particular bone of contention may be.

The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States...
...

To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof.

This last paragraph sums up the duty and responsibility of Congress to levy taxes and for what purpose. Note that the first section provides that "all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States", but specifically does not include taxes as applicable to this provision.

I'm the farthest thing from an authority on the Constitution, but it seems to read rather straightforwardly on this subject.
