Way back just before the Summer Olympic games in Beijing 2008 China realized they had to do something about the massive air pollution caused mostly by coal fired generation that ringed the city.

So they forced all of those very old, polluting generators to shut down and shifted power generation many many miles outside the city limits to new super critical units.

Temperature inversions on calm days caused horrendous pollution, especially in the wintertime. Many times stopping vertical mixing in the atmosphere.

We get those here in the Puget Sound area and another classic place for them is the LA basin.

I'll never forget the time I took off in my Cessna at First Air Field in Monroe, WA one morning in December many years ago.

28 degrees F at field elevation and once I had pasted thru about 1000 ft AGL the air temp jumped to 52 degrees F!

A real classical hard atmospheric inversion. All the smog trapped down near the surface. What we call sometimes Severe Clear above.
