Ericsson sees mobile phones with camera in one year

STOCKHOLM, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Telecoms equipment maker Ericsson, the third largest manufacturer of mobile phones, said on Wednesday it expected models with a camera to send and receive pictures to be on the market in a year's time. Ericsson and Finnish rival Nokia <NOK1V.HE> are both racing to come out with the most advanced phones to maintain or boost market share as competition heats up. Nokia, the biggest mobile phone manufacturer, will launch its 7110 Internet phone this autumn while Ericsson will launch its R380 rival at year-end.

Ericsson's head of research and innovation, Bernt Ericson, told Reuters the first multimedia phones able to record and send images may initially not be of great quality.

He declined to say when Ericsson would launch a camera-phone.

Ericson said that in a few years' time mobile phones would be made up of two units. One unit would be the actual phone, which could be placed in a pocket or briefcase, while a small remote headset would give the user freedom for talking.

"It's completely wrong that you can't see the display of the phone when you're talking," Ericson said. "You need flexibility to get mobility."

"You'll see two separate units in a few years."

Ericsson shares were down 3.5 crowns at 254.5 crowns in a slightly negative market at 1435 GMT.
