How about a look at the competing models for next-generation DWDM. For the longest of long hauls (undersea) solitons appear to be the transmission mode du jour. Qtera/Nortel and now Corvis seem to be using varients of the same technologies for longer distance backbone traffic. I believe Nortel claims to be able to transmit 80 channels at a time. But could solitons have inherent limitations? Do the frequency windows of their composit pulses prevent more than a few hundred channels of DWDM per fiber? Even if the Soliton networks are spared the operating requirements of EDFA's, is their operational domainst still restricted to the narrow window of frequencies (around 1.5 nm) in the fiber, or can they reclaim some of the unused spectrum? Now that the typical flurry of activity following the Gilder Report on AVNX is settling down, should we take a look at their claims/technologies. They claim to be able to construct and manage an 800 channel DWDM system. I believe it is not Soliton based but wonder if it could be (Qtera is evaluating some of their products). Their techniques for controling chromatic dispersion also appear to be interesting and useful (its the only Whitepaper on their site). Perhaps we can get some of the resident experts to offer their perspectives on these systems and others including ADC Telecom and their purchase of tunable laser maker Altitun.
