Makes perfect sense when you remember that Burr was considered a traitor to the cause by running a mostly real investigation even if much of the final report was classified in the end and the public can't actually see it, lol.

Besides, Burr has already said he isn't running when his term is up in 2022. So guys like Carslon can look very proper and collect some patriotic nonpartisan points by saying what a terrible person he is. Makes them look more journalistic instead of the partisans that they are. The Senate investigation will just be a show thing, dragged out forever until people mostly forget about it. Then if the Rs still hold the Senate next year, he'll get a rap on the knuckles. If they don't, he probably won't want to be in the Senate anyway. Being in the minority in a highly polarized country isn't much fun.
