Sasol Plans Louisiana Plant to Convert Natural Gas to Liquid Fuel

By BEN LEFEBVRE HOUSTON—Sasol Ltd. said it plans to build a plant to convert natural gas to liquid fuel in Louisiana, another step in energy companies' search to find new outlets for the country's natural-gas glut.

Sasol said it has already acquired some land adjacent to its chemical factory in Calcasieu Parish, La., for either a 96,000 barrel-a-day plant—estimated at $10 billion—or one half that size. The South African company will take 18 months to study logistics for the first-of-its kind plant.

U.S. inventory of natural gas has ballooned as new technology has unlocked previously unattainable supply from shale fields. As the growing supply has kept prices for the commodity hovering around $4 per million British thermal unit, about a third of the highs reached in the mid-2000s, investors have pushed for using natural gas as a transportation fuel.

The proposed plant would process most of the gas into diesel but could also produce jet fuel, a Sasol spokesman said.
