Army Secretary Should Testify Before Congress, Democrat Says nytimes.com A spokesman for a senior House Democrat said yesterday that the secretary of the Army, Thomas E. White, should testify before Congress about his role as an executive of the Enron Corporation (news/quote). Because of recent disclosures about potential accounting lapses at the unit that he helped lead, Mr. White is someone Congress will have to question, said Philip M. Schiliro, a spokesman for Representative Henry A. Waxman of California, the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Government Reform. A spokesman for Mr. White did not return calls on Thursday. Mr. White did not respond to a list of questions sent to his spokesman yesterday. Mr. White's role at Enron could become embarrassing for the Bush administration, both because Mr. White made tens of millions of dollars during his 11-year career at Enron and because his appointment was supposed to be a sign of the corporate culture that the administration planned to bring to the military.
