Auckland definitely has a more moderate climate than Washington. We never need air conditioning in summer. We don't need a fan these days. In the good old days, before the greenhouse effect and global warming, we'd have a fan running in my parent's house.

I don't know anyone who has an air-conditioner. There are plenty of dehumidifiers around though, for use in winter, which is damp.

In winter, our houses tend to be cold because it's hardly cold enough to heat them. In the evening, people turn heaters on.

Offices have air conditioners and heating, especially big buildings.

Dehumidifiers are annoying because you have to keep the house shut or you are just trying to dry the world's air, as it circulates through your house. Which is difficult given the activity of hurricanes, which are more powerful than all your dehumifiers put together.
